2023' top 5 brand-new, original horror films

5. “Cocaine Bear”

Director: Elizabeth Banks

The silly, campier horror-comedy film "Cocaine Bear" is a wild addition to the animal-attack subgenre, loosely inspired by the true story of an American black bear that ingested several kilograms of a bag of cocaine in Chattahoochee National Forest in 1985. If you enjoyed Idris Elba's survival of killer lions in "Beast" (2022), you might give it a try.

4. “No One Will Save You”

Director: Brian Duffield

In the Hulu original film "No One Will Save You," science fiction turns into "science friction." In the film, Kaitlyn Dever plays a young woman who, amid an extraterrestrial invasion, lives alone in her childhood house. Although Brian Duffield, the director, crafts visually striking scenes with TV static crackling, I believe we encounter the alien too early and too frequently.

3. “Infinity Pool”

Director: Brandon Cronenberg

Classics like "The Fly" and "Dead Ringers" were directed by his father, David Cronenberg. With "Infinity Pool," which stars Alexander Skarsgård as a struggling playwright on vacation with his wife before a fellow traveler (Mia Goth) sends them into terrible madness akin to "Ex Machina" meets "Midsommar," Brandon Cronenberg now forges his own route.

2. “The Boston Strangler”

Director: Matt Ruskin

Though it's hard to top David Fincher's "Zodiac," Hulu's serial-killer mystery film, which stars Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon as two real-life crime reporters trying to catch the infamous Boston Strangler, who killed 13 women in 1960s Boston, features some of the most intense movie moments this year, despite not being a horror film.

1. “Renfield”

Director: Chris McKay

Bram Stoker's classic tale is reintroduced to a new generation, 92 years after Bela Lugosi in "Dracula" (1931) and a century after Max Schreck in "Nosferatu" (1922). This time, the focus is on Nicholas Hoult ("Warm Bodies") as Renfield, the "familiar" sidekick of Dracula, played by Nicolas Cage, who looks to be having the time of his life.
