Grieving US Marine Thomas "Tommy" Riordan visits his father, Buddy Conlon, a recovering alcoholic who has returned to his Catholic faith in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

As a child, Tommy had to run away from Paddy with his dying mother due to Paddy being an alcoholic, and never forgiving him. Buddy tries to convince him that he has changed, but to no avail.

The next day, Tommy entered the gym where he quickly knocked out Pete "Mad Dog" Grimes, one of the best middleweight fighters in the world; A video of the fight is going viral on the Internet.

Upon learning of a winner-takes-all mixed martial arts tournament called Sparta, in which the winner will receive $5 million, Tommy asks Buddy to help him train for the tournament, but on the condition that Buddy does not try to reconcile their relationship.

Tommy pledges to win and then donate the entire $5 million purse to Pilar, the widow of one of his friends in the Corps.

Tommy's older brother, Brendan, is a high school physics teacher and former mixed martial arts fighter, struggling to provide for his wife, Tess, and their two daughters.

He had to mortgage his house in Philadelphia to pay for his youngest daughter's open-heart surgery, and now he's in danger of losing her.

To supplement his income, Brendan begins fighting amateur fighters for money.

He is suspended without pay after details of his secret life spread throughout the school.

Paddy meets Brendan in his driveway to try to reconcile with him, albeit to no avail, and to tell him that Tommy is back in town.

Brendan seeks out the training of his old friend Frank Campana and begins competing in smaller fights.

When the brothers enter separately into the tournament, it is revealed that Tommy is angry at Brendan for saving him and instead stayed behind for Tess when Tommy and their mother Paddy left;

Tommy was left to care for their mother when she became terminally ill.

Brendan claims that he was helplessly in love with Tess and that he has forgiven his father for the mistake he made, but Tommy is not convinced and turns away.

Meanwhile, a video of Tommy beating Grimes attracts the attention of a Marine, who tells the press that Tommy saved his life in Iraq, by ripping off the back door of a sinking tank.

Although Tommy became a national hero, his military records reveal that he deserted after his unit was killed in a friendly fire bombing.

He reveals that he pledged to give his winnings to Pilar, the widow of Manny, one of his fallen friends.

The military police will detain him but will wait until the tournament ends.

During their two fights, Brendan and Tommy have contrasting fortunes:

Tommy knocks out opponents quickly and brutally, and doesn't say or talk much, while Brendan is physically outmatched but uses Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to force them into grappling submission

The night before the final day, Buddy tried to talk to Tommy about his actions in Iraq.

Tommy angrily kicks his father out, letting out all his pent-up emotions. Paddy relapses and starts drinking again.

When Tommy sees his father in pain, he soothes and comforts him, thus rekindling the relationship with him.

In the semi-finals, Tommy faced Mad Dog Grimes, knocking him unconscious almost instantly, which commentators claim is one of the fastest knockouts in mixed martial arts history.

Brendan faces undefeated Russian wrestler Koba, whom he dominated in two rounds.

In the third round, Brendan swings for the fences, making the bout a back-and-forth battle. In the final moments of the final round, Cuba got Brendan's back from a clinch, and Brendan nailed it with a running knee.

As Cuba tries to escape the situation, Brendan quickly retreats and resets the knee bar, narrowly winning via submission.

Tommy and Brendan's relationship is revealed to the world when they are the last remaining fighters in the tournament.

Brendan shows a desire to reconcile, but Tommy, still in pain, shows no interest in doing so.

Tommy won the first two rounds, but Brendan eventually dislocated Tommy's shoulder with an omoplata arm lock.

Brendan wants to tell the referee that Tommy's shoulder is dislocated and the fight is over, but his coach suggests otherwise.

As the fourth round begins, Brendan insists that Tommy surrender because Tommy only uses one arm.

Tommy continues to fight, and Brendan unleashes a barrage of strikes in an attempt to get the win.

Tommy tells Brendan to keep hitting him as the fourth round ends.

At the start of round five, Brendan realizes he has to force him to submit, and traps Tommy in a rear-naked choke.

As they struggle on the canvas, Brendan apologizes to Tommy and tells him he loves him.

Tommy gives up after hearing the words.

Brendan and Campana tactfully avoid the referees and doctors examining Tommy
