في عام 1980، يصل اللاجئ الكوبي والمدان السابق توني مونتانا إلى ميامي، فلوريدا، «كجزء من هجرة ماريل الجماعه»، حيث يتم إرساله إلى مخيم للاجئين مع أصدقائه، ماني راي، أنجيل وتشي تشي. يتم الإفراج عن الأربعة وحصلوا على بطاقات خضراء مقابل قتلهم لجنرال كوبي سابق بناء على طلب أحد أباطرة المخدرات في ميامي فرانك لوبيز. يتم توظيفهم في أحد المطاعم الصغيرة. لكن توني يشعر بالاشمئزاز ويقول إن هذا ليس قدره وأنه مخصص لأشياء أكبر.

يرسل فرانك توني وعمر إلى كوتشابامبا في بوليفيا، للقاء ملك الكوكايين أليخاندرو سوسا. يتفاوض توني على صفقة متجاوزا فيه الشروط التي حددها فرانك، مما أثار غضب عمر. يرسل سوسا عمر للذهاب للطوافة المعدة لرحلة عودته هو وتوني، يذهب عمر أولا ويستوقف سوسا توني من اجل الحديث عن موضوع، في أثناء الحديث، يعطي سوسا لتوني منظارا ويأخذه توني ويرى رجال سوسا يشنقون عمر من الطوافة، يدعي سوسا أن عمر مخبر لدى الشرطة وأن فرانك لا يدير الأمور بشكل جيد. يصبح توني ممثلا لفرانك، ويعجب سوسا بتوني، ويوافق الجميع على عقد الصفقة، ولكن ليس قبل تحذير توني بأن لا يفكر في خيانته أبدًا.

In 1980, Cuban refugee and former convict Tony Montana arrives in Miami, Florida, as part of the Mariel boatlift, where he is sent to a refugee camp with his friends, Manny Ray, Angel, and Chi Chi. The four are released and given green cards in exchange for killing a former Cuban general at the request of Miami drug lord Frank Lopez. They are employed at a small restaurant, but Tony feels disgusted and believes he is destined for bigger things.
They meet Omar Suarez, Frank's right-hand man, and agree to send them to buy cocaine from Colombian dealers as a test, but the deal goes sour. Tony's friend Angel is killed with a chainsaw in front of him, causing suspicion among Manny and Chi Chi who were waiting for Tony and Angel in the car due to their long wait. They go to investigate, storm the apartment, witness the incident, and kill the Colombians. The friends suspect Omar tricked them and sent them into this trap. Tony and his friends insist on delivering the merchandise and the recovered money to Frank personally. During their meeting, Tony is drawn to Frank's wife, Elvira. Frank hires Tony and Manny.
Tony meets his younger sister Gina, and his excessively controlling mother. Disgusted by his criminal lifestyle, his mother kicks him out. Manny becomes attracted to Gina, but Tony tells him to stay away from her.
Frank sends Tony and Omar to Cochabamba, Bolivia, to meet cocaine kingpin Alejandro Sosa. Tony negotiates a deal surpassing Frank's terms, angering Omar. Sosa sends Omar to go to the plane prepared for their return trip with Tony. Omar goes first, and Sosa stops Tony to talk about the matter. During the conversation, Sosa gives Tony a sniper rifle, and Tony takes it and sees Sosa's men hanging Omar from the plane. Sosa claims Omar is a police informant and that Frank is not managing things well. Tony becomes a representative for Frank, impresses Sosa, and everyone agrees to the deal, but not before Tony warns never to think about betraying him.
Upon returning to Miami, Frank is enraged by Omar's death and the unauthorized deal made by Tony, while Tony begins his independent operation of smuggling cocaine. In a nightclub, corrupt police officer Bernstein, on Frank's payroll, tries to extort money from Tony in exchange for police protection. In the club, Tony finds Gina with her intimate friend. Tony brutally assaults Gina's friend and orders Manny to take Gina home. Tony returns to his private table in the club. Meanwhile, two hired assassins arrive to kill him. However, he miraculously survives and escapes. Tony realizes that Bernstein and the hitmen were sent by Frank. Tony goes to Frank's mansion and confronts him. At gunpoint, Frank confesses to orchestrating the assassination attempt and begs for his life, but he and Bernstein are killed by Manny and Tony, respectively. Tony marries Elvira and becomes Sosa's chief distributor. Tony builds an empire worth millions of dollars and moves to live in a lavish mansion under tight security.
By 1983, a sting operation by federal agents leads to Tony being charged with tax evasion, with an inevitable prison sentence. Sosa offers to use his government contacts to get Tony out of jail, but only if Tony assassinates a journalist planning to expose Sosa's drug operations, and Tony agrees. During a dinner at a restaurant, Tony gets drunk and accuses Manny of being responsible for his arrest and mocks Elvira for being barren and a drug addict, prompting Elvira to leave him.
Tony travels to New York City to carry out the assassination with one of Sosa's henchmen, The Shadow, who plants a remotely controlled bomb under the journalist's car. However, the journalist is accompanied unexpectedly by his wife and children. This leads Tony to cancel the operation, but with The Shadow's insistence on proceeding with the operation, Tony kills him before he can detonate the bomb. Tony returns to Miami, where an angry Sosa threatens Tony over the phone with punishment after the journalist exposes Sosa's drug smuggling operations. Tony, at his mother's request, tracks down Gina, where he finds her with Manny. In a fit of rage, Tony shoots Manny dead as he desires Gina himself! Gina tearfully tells Tony they had just gotten married the day before. A distraught Tony takes Gina back to his house, where he begins heavily using cocaine in his office.
As dozens of Sosa's men begin to sneak into Tony's mansion, Gina enters Tony's drug-fueled office and tells him he killed Manny because he wanted her! She shoots at him but is killed by one of Sosa's men, who is then killed by Tony. All of Tony's men are killed. Tony notices assassins waiting for him outside his office. Tony grabs his grenade launcher-equipped gun and shouts one of the most famous lines in American cinema:
"Say hello to my little friend!"
Tony fires a grenade from his grenade launcher at his front door, killing those waiting for him at the door, and he steps out and begins shooting heavily at Sosa's men. Tony is repeatedly shot by the remaining attackers, but he continues to taunt them while wounded until he is shot from behind by one of the attackers with a shotgun. Tony's body falls into a fountain below, in front of a statue bearing the inscription "The world is yours."
