Professor Boffens  Robot 

 

Part one        

This is Professor Boffins house . its morning .Professor Boffin and his wife are having breakfast . they are sitting at the  table Professor Boffinis sitting opposite Mrs Boffin

 

Mrs Boffin doesn’t look very well . Professor Boffin notices it . “what is the matter, dear? ” he ask

I don’t feel very well , Mrs Boffin says . I feel tired . I have a headache , too . there is a lot of work in this house . I go shopping everyday . I cook three meals everyday . I wash the dishes everyday . I make the beds everyday . I sweep the floors everyday Housework , Housework , Housework . But you are always busy . you never help me with the housework .” well , have a nice rest , dear ,”

 Professor Boffin says . “ but first you must have an asprin . you must have a drink of water , too . 

Thank you , dear . she puts the asprin into her mouth . “ Ugh” she says “ Asprins taste awful. 

That’s better , Mrs Boffein says . my headaches nearly better . have a cup of tea , dear .

 but Professor Boffin doesn’t answer . he is thinking Mrs Boffin says , Do you want any tea, dear ? Eh? What ? No thanks . I am thinking . 

professor Boffins eyes are shining. He leaves the table. “ where are you going ? Dear  

Mrs Boffin asks . “ I am going to my workroom . I have a good idea “ Professor Boffin answers . 

I cant tell you now . it’s a secret. Professor Boffin goes to his workroom and locks the door. 

“ I can begin work now , he says .” I need a lot of things . I need some metal and I need some wire . what is in this cupboard ? Good, There is a lot of metal and wire in here. Professor Boffin was upstairs.

Mrs Boffin was downstairs. She was in the kitchen . I don’t want a rest now , she says “ I feel better now . I must wash these dishes , then I must cook a meal for our lunch . Housework,Housework,Housework . Professor Boffin works for many days . Mrs Boffin brings his meal to his workroom . Sometimes he has a meal and sometimes he doesn’t have a meal . Mrs Boffin knocks at his door . “ I cant open the door,” he calls “I am very busy.” Professor Boffin works at night ,too . “ you must have a rest dear , Mrs Boffin calls . “ its late “ I cant Professor Boffin answers .

 I am busy. I am working . what are you doing ? Mrs Boffin asks . I cant tell you now . it’s a secret. 

A fortnight passes . Professor Boffin is still working . he is very tired now , but he is very happy . its nearly ready now . he says I am going to shop work now . Tonight , I can have a good rest, and tomorrow …Ha,Ha, he  laughs . 

 

? The next morning , Professor Boffin calls his wife “ come upstairs and see , he calls “ what is it 

 Mrs Boffin asks . she goes into his workroom “ My goodness , she cries . that’s a funny thing .

Meet Robert the Robot , Professor Boffin says . he is going to do all the housework for you . can he talk? Mrs Boffin asks “No he cant . But he is very clever, he can understand English . he is going to help you with the housework . Robert the Robot can cook the meal and wash the dishes and make the beds and sweep the floors . he can do all the house work . he is very strong and he never needs a rest . Do you , Robert ? the Professor ask. Robert smiles and shakes his head .

“ but please be careful “ the professor says . “ you can turn him off with this switch. But you must never open this little door at the back and you must never touch the wires . the wires are dangerous . yes , dear thank you very much . Robert begins work ar once. There were a lot of dirty dishes in the kitchen an hour ago , but there aren’t any now . Robert puts all the clean dishes in the cupboard . then he sweeps the floor . the kichen is tidy and Mrs Boffin is happy . “ Now Robert “ Mrs Boffin says . 

I am going to the groceries . you must stay here and do the housework for me please . Robert smiles. he makes the beds and cleans the windows . “ I am lucky , “ Mrs Boffin says . 

Mrs Boffin goes to the grocers , the stationers and the bakers . she buys lots of things . then she comes home . Robert is having  a rest . he is watching television . the house is clean and tidy . 

At midday , two cars stop outside Professor Boffins house. The cat are full of reporters . they want to speak to Professor Boffin . they want to write about Robert for their newspaper . they want to take some photographs too. The reporters knock at the door and Professor Boffin opns it.

 “ we are reporters ,sir  , the men say we want to meet your Robot . “ come in “ the Professor says 

“ Robert the Robot is in the kichen . he is making some cakes for tea” . Robert smiled at the reporters . 

The reporters asked Professor Boffin lots of questions . “ we must write about Robert for our newspaper , the reporters say. “ but first you must have some tea and cakes , Mrs Boffin says . Robert brings some tea and cakes . the reporters take photographs of Professor Boffin and Mrs Boffin too . 

“Mm” they say , Robert makes very good cakes . these cakes smell good . they taste good , too .

Part Two

This is Jollys Circus . its not very good circus and very few people go to it . the seats are nearly always empty . two people are coming out now . they are talking . “I didn’t enjoy that . did you? “ no I didn’t enjoy it at all

Jolly Joe is talking to his friends Graball and Scab . they are all very bad . Jolly Joe is a fat man . he has small blue eyes and black hair. he is very cruel . Graball is tall and atrong . Scab is short and ugly . Graball and Scab are thieves . Jolly Joy is very sad . he owes some money to Graball and Scab, but he cant pay them . the two thieves steal animals and sell them to Jolly Joe . “ we want our money , they say . “ I cant pay you your money , Joe says “ I haven’t any money . “look at those lions “

 Jolly Joe says,they are old tired . I beat them everyday , but they don’t work for me . they are always sleepy. They cant jump and they cant run , but they can eat a lot of meat . I paid a lot of money for meat a few days ago. And look at those horses. They are old too. I beat them everyday too , but they don’t work for me . they are lazy. They only want to eat grass. They are always hungry , but I don’t give them any food . they don’t want to work . 

And look to Boko , the clown . he was here twenty years ago , and he is still here. he is not very funny .

I beat him ,too , and I never pay him any money . look at the seat out there. Look at them , they are empety . we don’t care , Graball says we want our money . I must think of a plan , Joe says “ 

Can you bring me some crocodiles ? people like crocodiles, Scab says . they are dangerous . 

Then Jolly Joe opened his newspaper and looked at it . “ Hey” he said . look at this .

A famous scientist, Professor Boffin , makes a Robot . this is an interesting story . listen. We want our money, Scab said “ we don’t wanr to listen to stories . you don’t understand , Joe cried .

You can steal this Robot for me and bring it to the circus . I can get a lot of money with a Robot

Hundreds of people want to see a thing like that. I can get a lot of money and then I can pay my bills.

Graball and Scab smiled. That is a good plan . this Robot can work in Joes circus, Graball said .

And don’t forget , Joe said this Robot doesn’t eat and doesn’t want any money . lets steal the Robot, Scab said . 

The next morning , Graball and Scab went to professor Boffins house. They parked their car opposite the house . they stayed in their car for a long time and looked at the house. This is the right house , Scab said . I have the address here . then the front door opened. Look , Graball said . that is Professor Boffin . he is going to work . he doesn’t stay at home during the day . that’s good . that’s very good 

Professor Boffin went to work . then the door opened again and Mrs boffin came out . “look

 Scab said. That’s the Professors wife. She is holding a bag . she is going shopping . the house is empty now . the Robot is in there . we can go in and steal him . Graball and Scab climbed into the house throught an open window Robert didn’t hear them .” Sh” Scab whispered . Be careful , don’t make noise. look Graball whispered . I can see the Robot . he is in the kitchen.Robert was in the kitchen . he washed the dishes and the thieves watched him. Listen , Scab whispered , you can open the back of the Robot and I can cut the wires . then we can pull him in the car . Graball and Scab went behind Robert . they were very quiet and he didn’t hear them . the thieves stood behind Robert, so he didn’t see them . he was busy. There were lots of dirty dishes , but of course Robert didn’t mind of all . 

Suddendly , Graball opened the back of the Robot and Scab cut the wires . Quick, Graball shouted . you can push and I can pull. He is very heavy. he cant move now . we can take him out of the kitchen and put him in the back of the car . but the thieves made a mistake. Robert turned round and looked at them . he opened his big , big eyes . he opened his mouth , too he was very ,very cross. 

What is happening ? Graball asked . I don’t know Scab answered . then Robert stretched out his arms . he wanted to catch the thieves . Quick, Scab cried . lets run Graballand Scab ran after them . he ran fast too , but he didn’t catch them the thieves ran away. 

Part Three 

It was nearly twelve oclock . Mrs Boffin came home . she smiled happily. Robert is in the kitchen, she thought . He is cooking my lunch . I can give him these groceries and he can put them in the cupboard for me . then Mrs Boffin opened the door . my goodness she said softly then she spoke very crossly what is going on ? she cried . look at this mess , look at this mirror and these clothes , look at this umbrella , what is happening? Then Mrs Boffin went to the kitchen quickly . my goodness , she shouted . look at this mess , look at this plates and cups , look at the water on the floor , the taps running . this is very strange . I cant understand it at all . where is Robert ?  where is he 

 Mrs Boffin creid . Robert,Robert but Robert didn’t answer . that’s funny , Mrs Boffin looked in all the rooms , but Robert wasn’t there . then Mrs Boffin looked out of a window and she saw Robert . he was in the garden . oh, she cried Roberts got an axe in his hand . he is cutting down our nice apple tree.  he Iooks very cross . what can I do ? what can I do ?  Mrs Boffin opened the kitchen door and went into the garden Robert , she called . but Robert didn’t pay attention to her . Robert, Mrs Boffin shouted crossly stop that at once, come into the kitchen and clean up the mess . then Robert looked up and saw her . he looked cross , but Mrs Boffin was not afraid . I have just had a bad shock .

 Mrs Boffin  said . come into the kitchen please, but Robert ran after her and she went into the kitchen and locked the door . then Mrs Boffin ran out of the house and down the street. There was a telephone box near her house and Mrs Boffin ran to it . I must telephone Professor Boffin . 

she thought  he must come home quickly . Oh dear , oh dear Mrs Boffin telephone the Professor .

 I have just been home and I have just had a tribble shock , she cried . she told him about the mess in the kitchen . she told him about the axe and the apple tree . please come home quickly, she cried .

Professor Boffin  arrived in his car where is Robert ? he asked

He is in the garden , Mrs Boffin said . I locked the kitchen door you must go into the garden , but please be careful . Robert has got an axe and he is very dangerous . Professor Boffin looked out of the kitchen window . Robert is sitting on the garden seat,he said How long ago did he go into the garden? The Professor asked . I don’t know , Mrs Boffin said he has been there for a long time. 

Professor Boffin went into the garden . he walked very quietly Robert didn’t see him and didn’t hear him . Robert sat on the garden seat and looked at the apple tree . he looked very unhappy ,too 

Professor Boffin went behind Robert quietly and he turned off the switch quickly . Robert closed his eyes at once . he was asleep Good, the Professor said . now let me have a look . I can open the back and I can fix him. Professor Boffin looked at the back . my goodness , he cried look at all these wires what has happen? Mrs Boffin asked . has there been an accident ? No, there hasn’t been an accident , Professor Boffin answered . Did you open the back , dear? Professor Boffin asked. No, I didn’t touch the back , Mrs Boffin answered. Then who opened it? I cant understand it. This is very strange. 

Professor Boffin looked at the wires . I can fix Robert very quickly , he said, but this is very strange . Robert is good and well behaved. Have you fixed him yet, dear? Mrs Boffin asked. No I haven’t fixed him yet . Professor Boffin worked hard . let me see , he said . I must put this wire here and that one there. That is it. I have fixed him now. Have you turned on the switch yet? Mrs Boffin asked. No I haven’t turned it on yet . Professor Boffin turned on the switch. Robert opened his eyes and smiled. He looked at Mrs Boffin sadly . he cant speak , Professor Boffin  said but he is saying, I am sorry. its all right ,Robert , Mrs Boffin said , but please be good now. Robert went into the kitchen and worked hard .he was happy again.has Robert finished work yet Professor Boffin  asked Oh yes , Mrs Boffin said . he finished work a while ago. Now the house is clean and tidy. 

Part four

Graball and Scab were at Jolly joys Circus . he told him the story . Jolly Joe was very cross . you are both very silly , he said . you cut the wires . there is a switch at the back. I read about it. We didn’t know that . what can we do now ? Scab said . you can go there again , Jolly Joe answered. You can say we are reporters. We want to take some photographs for our newspaper go there again . the thieves cried . we don’t want to go there again, I am afraid of the Robot , Scab said . he doesn’t like me . I cut the wires. Don’t be silly, Jolly Joe said . That Robot has made of metal and wires. It cant remember you. It cant hear , speak or understand to my plan . I am going to come with you . I am going to drive the car . we can go to the Professors house . you can both go into the house and I can wait in the car. Then you can bring the Robot out of the house and push him into the car. 

How can we do that ? Scab asked . you will say” we want to take some photographs of Robert .

 can he come outside?  Joe answered , all right , Graball said . I am not afraid of a piece of metal .

 lets go then , Scab said . Jolly Joe and the thieves put on their hats and coats . Scab took a camera and some paper and pencils. Now you look like reporters , Joe said but lets go to the Professors house . its late . we mustnt waste time. 

The car arrived at Professor Boffins house . I am going to wait in the car , Joe said . now remember I bring the Robot out here . I can open the door and then you can push the Robot into the car . then we can drive away. 

Good afternoon, sir, Scab said . we are reporters . we have heared about your clever Robot . we want to write about him and take some pohotographs of him. Yes of course Professor Boffin said . come in please. we want to take some photographs indoor and some in the street too. Is that all right? 

Scab asked . of course the Professor said . Robert will come outside with you . but first you must come into the kitchen and meet him. Robert looked at the thieves and remembered them . he picked them up and held them hight in the air . he looked at them very crossly . please don’t hurt us , Scab cried . 

We are very sorry . it was Jolly Joes idea. I don’t understand , the Professor said and he looked at the thieves . the Robot must let us go and then we can tell you, Graball said . Robert, Professor Boffin called . put these men down and don’t hurt them . Robert put them down . we wanted to steal your Robot  Scab said . I cut the wire but the Robot got very cross . it wasn’t our idea. It was Jolly Joes idea he wants the Robot for this Circus . he is outside now . he is waiting for us . he is sitting in the car. But Professor  Boffin and his wife didn’t listen to the thieves . they looked at Robert. Poor Robert ,

Mrs Boffin cried . poor Robert . quick , Scab whispered . they are not looking at us . lets run away . hurry up , Graball whispered . the thieves ran out of the room but Robert noticed them. He ran after them too. Oh Mrs Boffin cried . they will run away. You must catch them, Robert. They are very bad men . they wanted to take you to a circus . the thieves were outside . they got into the car. Quick , Scab cried . start the engine . The Robots running after us . Jolly Joe started the engine . shut the door, he shouted . Hurry up , Robert stop them, Mrs Boffin cried . she was right . Robert hit the front of the car  very hard. He broke the engine . lets jump out and run , Joe cried open the door, Scab. I cant open it Scab answered. Suddenly , Robert picked up the car . he held it hight in the air . now Robert, Professor Boffin called, hold the car hight in the air like that. Follow me. We will all go to the police station . the police will want to meet Joe and his friends . 

Robert followed Professor Boffin . he held the car hight in the air . Mrs Boffin went to the police station with them . Robert smiled , but the thieves looked very sad. We will be in the prison for a long time , Scab said sadly. 

Professor Boffin went into the station and spoke to the chief inspector . come outside, he said

 Do you want me to come now? The inspector said. I am busy , but we have caught some thieves. They are outside, the Professor said . my goodness the inspector said look at that , the policeman cried . now Robert , the Professor said will you put the car down? please 

Robert put the car on the ground . the policeman took Jolly Joe and the two thieves. Take them to prison , the inspector said . we know these men . they are dangerous thieves . their names are Graball and Scab they steal Robert the Robot , too . the chief inspector shook hands with Robert. He is very clever. We must give him a reward, he said what shall we give him? Lets give him a policeman said . he can have mine . Robert put it on and smiled. The helmet suits him very well , Mrs Boffin said.Can he keep it ? of course the chief inspector said  he is a very good policeman
