Shadows on the Wall (Part 1: The New House)

It was exactly 11:00 PM when the car headlights cut out in front of the new house. It didn't look suspiciously ancient or terrifying—just a typical 1980s suburban build smelling faintly of dried pine leaves and damp autumn earth. For Sarah, this property represented a much-needed fresh start after a chaotic and stressful year working in the bustling city. She envisioned spending her upcoming evenings reading comfortably by the fireplace and regaining her mental peace. Yet, the silence surrounding the entire property from the very first moment was far from peaceful; it was a heavy, suffocating stillness, as if the house itself was holding its breath in anticipation.
The First Spark
On the very first night, nothing overly dramatic happened like in classic horror movies. There were no slamming doors or disembodied shrieks echoed through the corridors. The phenomena started far too subtly, making Sarah question her own sanity first. The temperature in the master bedroom would inexplicably plunge to freezing levels, despite the central heating being cranked to its maximum capacity. She could actually see her own breath misting in the indoor air.
Then, at precisely 3:17 AM, Sarah woke up to a sharp, rhythmic tapping on the bedroom windowpane facing the backyard. Three distinct, deliberate taps: Tap... tap... tap. When she finally gathered her courage, stepped forward, and pulled back the heavy curtains, there were no nearby tree branches touching the glass and no wind blowing outside. Instead, she found the faint, fading condensation of a warm human palm print on the outside of the ice-cold glass, evaporating slowly right before her horrified eyes.
Footsteps in the Hall
By the third day, the terrifying phenomenon moved from the window to the indoor floors. While sitting quietly in the ground-floor living room working on her laptop, Sarah heard the unmistakable sound of bare feet slowly pacing the hardwood floor in the upstairs hallway. The footsteps were steady and deliberate, moving across the hall until they stopped directly above where Sarah was sitting.
Immediately after the footsteps ceased, a subtle creak echoed from the wooden ceiling boards, vibrating slightly as if a heavy weight was standing right there, simply waiting and listening to her every move. When she finally gathered the bravery to grab a flashlight and inspect the upper hallway, the air up there was unnaturally warm, but a sharp scent of sulfur hung heavily in the space. At the end of the long corridor, the wooden attic door remained firmly deadbolted from the outside... exactly as she had left it.
Sometimes, a door locked from the outside isn't meant to keep things in... it’s meant to make sure they don't come out for you. What is breathing behind that door? Stay tuned for Part 2.
