# The House That Knocked at 3 A.M.
Adam had never believed in ghosts.
He laughed whenever people talked about haunted houses, strange spirits, or mysterious disappearances. To him, every strange event had a logical explanation.
That was why he accepted his uncle's offer to rent an old house at the edge of a small village.
The house was cheap, large, and far away from the noise of the city. It stood at the end of a narrow road surrounded by tall trees. There were no neighboring houses nearby, except for an abandoned cottage across the road.
The house itself looked old but comfortable. Its wooden floors creaked whenever Adam walked across them, and several doors had faded paint. However, one thing immediately caught his attention.
The front door was covered with deep scratches.
When Adam asked his uncle about them, his uncle simply said, “The house is old. Don't worry about it.”
Adam forgot about the scratches.
Until the first night.
At exactly 3:00 a.m., he woke up to a strange sound.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
Someone was knocking on the front door.
Adam sat up in bed and looked at the clock.
3:00 a.m.
He waited for a few seconds.
Then the knocking came again.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
Adam walked downstairs and opened the door.
Nobody was there.
The road was empty.
The trees moved gently in the cold wind, but there was no sign of anyone.
Adam closed the door and went back upstairs.
The next night, the same thing happened.
3:00 a.m.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
This time, Adam was annoyed.
He opened the door immediately, expecting to catch someone playing a stupid prank.
Again, nobody was there.
But something was different.
On the ground in front of the door were several small, wet footprints.
They started at the door and continued toward the garden.
Then they suddenly stopped.
Adam followed them with his eyes.
There was nothing there.
The following morning, he told an old neighbor about what had happened.
The man's expression changed immediately.
"You should not open the door again," he whispered.
Adam laughed nervously.
“Why?”
The old man looked toward the house.
“Because sometimes the knocking doesn't come from outside.”
Adam stopped smiling.
“What does that mean?”
The old man refused to answer.
That night, Adam stayed awake.
He wanted to prove that there was a simple explanation.
He watched the clock.
2:57.
2:58.
2:59.
Then the clock changed.
3:00.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
Adam froze.
The sound did not come from the front door.
It came from somewhere inside the house.
He slowly stepped into the hallway.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
The sound came from underneath the stairs.
Adam turned on the light and discovered a small wooden door that he had never noticed before.
He approached it.
The knocking stopped.
Adam placed his hand on the handle.
Then he remembered the old man's warning.
He stepped back.
The next morning, he searched the house for a key.
After several hours, he found one hidden inside an old kitchen drawer.
The key was covered in dust.
Adam stood in front of the small door for several minutes before finally inserting the key.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Behind it was a narrow storage room filled with old boxes, broken furniture, and faded photographs.
Adam searched through the boxes until he found a small leather diary.
The first pages described the history of the house.
The previous owner had written about a young girl who disappeared many years ago.
According to the diary, the girl began hearing three knocks every night at exactly 3:00 a.m.
Her family told her never to open the door.
One night, however, she did.
She disappeared before sunrise.
Her body was never found.
Adam continued reading.
The final pages were filled with trembling handwriting.
One sentence made his blood run cold:
*"If the knocking begins again, someone else has been chosen."*
Adam dropped the diary.
Suddenly, he heard a sound behind him.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
He turned around.
Nothing.
Then the sound came again.
This time, it came from the wall.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
Adam stepped backward.
A faint voice came from behind the wall.
“Open the door.”
Adam stopped breathing.
The voice sounded like a child.
“Please... I'm still here.”
The wall began to shake.
Small cracks appeared across its surface.
Adam ran toward the storage room entrance.
But the door was gone.
There was only a solid stone wall where the doorway had been.
He desperately searched for another exit.
Nothing.
The lights suddenly went out.
The room became completely dark.
Then he heard footsteps behind him.
Slow footsteps.
One step.
Then another.
Adam turned around.
He could barely see a small figure standing in the darkness.
The figure slowly raised one hand.
Then came the sound.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
Adam screamed.
The next morning, villagers found the front door of the house wide open.
Adam was gone.
There was no sign of him anywhere.
The strange thing was that the house now had another room.
A room that nobody remembered seeing before.
At the end of the hallway stood a small wooden door covered with fresh scratches.
Three deep scratches.
Every night, at exactly 3:00 a.m., people passing near the house claim they can hear someone knocking from inside.
**Knock... Knock... Knock.**
Some say they can also hear Adam's voice.
He begs someone to open the door.
But there is something even more terrifying.
The voice does not come from the house.
It comes from inside the homes of the people who hear it.
And if the knocking ever comes from your own door at exactly 3:00 a.m…
Never open it.
