The Face Outside My Window
A Short Horror Story
It began on a rainy Tuesday night when Daniel noticed someone standing outside his bedroom window.
He lived on the fourth floor of an old apartment building, so at first, he thought the shape was only a reflection of something inside his room. He rubbed his eyes and looked again.
A woman was standing on the other side of the glass.
She wore a long, white dress. Her black hair covered most of her face, and her hands rested against the window as if she were trying to get inside.
Daniel stumbled backward.
That was impossible. His bedroom window faced the street, and there was nothing outside except open air.
He grabbed his phone and switched on the flashlight.
The woman was gone.
Daniel told himself that he was tired. He had been working late for several nights, and the rain made strange shadows dance across the walls. He closed the curtains and went to bed.
At exactly 2:43 AM, three knocks came from the window.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Daniel opened his eyes.
He remained completely still, listening. The sound came again, slower this time.
He forced himself out of bed and pulled the curtains aside.
The woman was there again.
Her face was pressed against the glass.
Daniel screamed and fell to the floor. He scrambled toward the bedroom door, switched on every light in the apartment, and called his best friend, Michael.
“You have to come here,” Daniel whispered. “There's someone outside my window.”
Michael laughed at first, but Daniel's voice frightened him enough to make him take the situation seriously.
“Stay away from the window,” Michael said. “I'm coming.”
While Daniel waited, he heard a soft scratching sound coming from the bedroom.
He turned toward the doorway.
The scratching was coming from the inside of the wall.
Something was dragging its fingernails across the plaster, moving slowly toward the window.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent him a photograph.
It showed Daniel sleeping in his bed.
The picture had been taken from directly above him.
Beneath it were five words:
“You should not have looked.”
Daniel dropped the phone.
Suddenly, the lights went out.
He ran toward the front door, but before he reached it, he heard Michael's voice coming from the bedroom.
“Daniel? Open the window. I'm here.”
Daniel stopped.
Michael was supposed to be outside the apartment building.
Why was his voice coming from the bedroom?
“Michael?” Daniel called nervously.
“Come here,” the voice replied. “It's cold outside.”
Daniel backed away from the bedroom.
Then his real phone rang.
It was Michael.
“I'm downstairs,” his friend said. “But listen carefully. Don't come near your window. I just saw someone standing on the roof, looking down at your apartment.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“If you're downstairs,” he whispered, “who's in my bedroom?”
There was silence on the line.
Then Michael said, “Daniel, get out of the apartment. Right now.”
A loud crash came from the bedroom.
Daniel ran through the front door and raced down the stairs. He didn't stop until he reached the street, where Michael was waiting beside his car.
They drove to a nearby café and stayed there until sunrise.
When daylight came, Daniel finally felt brave enough to return to the building with Michael and the police.
They found no one inside the apartment.
The window was locked from the inside. There were no footprints, no broken glass, and no signs that anyone had entered the bedroom.
But the police officer noticed something strange.
On the wall beside the bed, someone had scratched a message into the paint.
“NEXT TIME, DON'T TURN AROUND.”
Daniel moved out that afternoon.
For several weeks, he stayed with Michael and tried to forget what had happened. Eventually, he found a new apartment across town, on the seventh floor of a modern building.
He never told anyone his new address.
He thought that was enough to keep him safe.
Then, one rainy night, he woke up at exactly 2:43 AM.
Three knocks came from his bedroom window.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Daniel slowly opened his eyes.
Outside the glass stood the same woman in the white dress.
But this time, her face was clearly visible.
It was Daniel's own face.
The woman smiled and raised one hand.
Behind her, written across the dark sky in letters that looked like scratches on glass, were three words:
“LET ME OUT.”
Daniel tried to scream.
But no sound came from his mouth.
Then he noticed the reflection in the window.
The woman was standing outside.
And Daniel's reflection was standing behind her.
Smiling.
THE END.
